(User-Illusion)

و «خود» (The Self) چیست؟

(Intentional Stance)

(Fulbright Fellowship)

(American Academy of Arts and Sciences)

The Architect of Absurdity: Daniel Dennett and the Mechanical Dissection of the Human Soul

Atrina Nateghi

If Peter Singer reduced the human being to a decimal, Daniel Dennett denied the human being's existence altogether. For half a century, this man has been celebrated at Tufts University and in Western academic circles as the "great philosopher of mind"—not because he discovered a truth, but because he gave Western civilization—thirsty to escape responsibility—a "scientific license" to stop looking inward. Dennett did not grant this license; he drew the "roadmap." He looked into the weeping, wondering, and living depths of human consciousness and called it a "User-Illusion." Then he smiled and collected another award.

Orodism does not treat this as a technical dispute in cognitive science; we treat it as an ontological crime against the "Three Fundamental Loves." Let us read this indictment in the light of wisdom and with reference to undeniable evidence.

1. The Annihilation of the Inner Light: Consciousness as "User-Illusion"

Dennett's most infamous and devastating act occurred in his controversial book Consciousness Explained (1991). A more honest title for this book would be Consciousness Denied. In this work, Dennett categorically rejects the existence of "Qualia"—first-hand subjective experience (such as the feeling of pain, seeing the color red, or the sense of love). Using a metaphor from computer science, he calls consciousness a "User-Illusion"—similar to the icons on a computer screen that have no physical reality, but are merely a graphical interface imposed on us by competing neural subroutines in the brain. Rejecting the "Cartesian Theater," he calls the brain a "Joycean Machine" that produces the illusion of a "self" through a phenomenon he calls "Fame in the Brain."

Let us comprehend this catastrophe: he looked at a mystic in prayer, a mother watching her child sleep with worry, a political prisoner silent under torture, and a poet composing at dawn—and in this entire vast spectrum of human interiority, he saw nothing but "buggy software" and "patterns of activation."

This is not philosophy; this is a "handbook of nihilism engineering" wearing glasses. In contrast, Philosopher Orod Bozorg in The Red Book decisively states: "Consciousness is the only path to freedom." This is not a metaphor; this is the pillar of Orodism. Freedom begins where a human being awakens within himself and says: "I am not livestock. I am not data. I am aware, therefore I can choose." Dennett's entire project is designed to suffocate this awakening before it occurs. He tells the young: "You are not the author of your thoughts; you are a collection of mindless robots pretending to be human."

But the undeniable facts: David Chalmers, a leading expert on mind, argues that Dennett's eliminativist approach only answers the "easy problem" of consciousness and leaves the "hard problem" unanswered. He calls this the "Datum Objection": qualia are themselves phenomena requiring explanation, not an explanatory assumption that can be rejected. John Searle also directly attacks Dennett's "User-Illusion" idea, saying: "In the case of consciousness, the existence of the appearance is the reality itself." That is, if we have the experience of consciousness, that experience is real, even if we cannot reduce it to a physical mechanism. Searle accuses Dennett of rejecting "the clearest datum that distinguishes us from machines" by denying qualia.

2. The Abolition of Humanity: From Darwin to Absolute Despair

Dennett's second crime is the weaponization of evolutionary theory. In Darwin's Dangerous Idea (1995), he introduces a concept called "Universal Acid." He argues that Darwinian natural selection is an acid that dissolves every container and consumes all structures of meaning, including love, art, ethics, and sacrifice. From his perspective, nothing is as it appears; everything is merely a "Good Trick" for the survival of genes or the replication of "Memes." He introduces the concept of "Competence without Comprehension" to prove that no "understanding" or "soul" is needed to perform complex tasks.

And what is the "Self"? Dennett's answer is surgical and cold. In his essay "The Self as a Center of Narrative Gravity" (1992), he states that the "self" is not a real object, but a "center of narrative gravity"—a fictional character the brain writes to keep the story of its behavior coherent, just like the center of gravity in physics, which is an abstract mathematical concept, not a physical object. You do not exist. You are a story. A useful fiction.

When Philosopher Orod Bozorg in The Red Book states: "Humanity is not our charity to others; humanity reflects the value of the gem of our existence," Dennett reduces this gem to zero. Dennett does not speak to humans; he speaks to "Assemblies." Assemblies optimize, replicate, but do not love; they merely execute strategies that, under thermal pressure, resemble love. Dennett gave the West this ultimate luxury: the freedom to do nothing for another human being, while believing that neither of them was truly "real" in the first place. Why feed the hungry if the hungry is merely a temporary coalition of selfish robots?

But the undeniable facts: Stephen Jay Gould, the eminent Harvard biologist, called Dennett an "Ultra-Darwinist" and "Darwinian Fundamentalist." Critics argue that in Darwin's Dangerous Idea, Dennett has no answer to the question of how any human ethics can be formulated without an inherent conception of human nature. Dennett himself, in an interview with The Guardian (2013), admits: "You can turn any philosopher—Aristotle, Kant, whoever—into a complete fool with a small twist." This sentence reveals the very nature of his approach: a mental game, not a search for truth.

3. The Counterfeit of Freedom: Compatibilism as the Doctrine of the Cage

Dennett's third betrayal is against the love of freedom. In Freedom Evolves (2003), he offers the West a deal: you can have free will, but only if you agree that it is a mechanical property. Freedom, in Dennett's hands, is not the inner responsibility that Philosopher Orod Bozorg calls the heartbeat of dignity. Freedom for Dennett is "Evitability"—the technical capacity of a complex system to avoid one outcome and select another, provided the laws of physics remain intact. This is freedom as traffic engineering.

This is the most perfect prison philosophy ever devised. It tells the prisoner: "You are free because in another possible world, the door could have opened, even though in this world it is locked. Be satisfied." It tells the citizen being harvested by algorithms: "You are free because your clicks are your own, even though the platform designed the menu. Be grateful."

In absolute contrast to this absurdity, The Red Book declares: "Freedom is not a gift or a present; freedom is responsibility, and undoubtedly indifferent people have no freedom." This means freedom is attained through consciousness, courage, and the refusal to surrender one's inner life to any external master (whether king, corporation, or causal chain). Dennett teaches humans to polish their chains and call them "Functional restraints."

But the undeniable facts: Numerous academic papers, including research at the University of Tehran (2016), show that Dennett's solution for reconciling free will with causal determinism is "insufficient and unacceptable," and he has not solved "the deep and historical problem of compatibilism." Sam Harris, neuroscientist, argues that Dennett's "free will" is merely another "User-Illusion" hidden in the "atmosphere of free will." Robert Bishop writes that "Dennett's rhetoric does not survive closer scrutiny."

4. Convergence with the Algorithmic Age: Preparing the World for the Worship of the Machine

Dennett's view that the human mind is merely "software" has made him the natural philosopher of Silicon Valley's deepest fantasy: the illusion that humans are merely early, buggy, and inefficient versions of artificial intelligence. If consciousness in carbon is an illusion, why should it be sacred in silicon? If the "self" is a fictional story in the brain, why should an AI not have equal moral standing?

Dennett did not warn the world about the rise of the machine; he prepared the world to worship it, by teaching that humanity was already a machine. Dennett himself declared in an interview with Edge.org: "Yes, I think AI consciousness is possible, because after all, what are we? We are self-conscious. We are robots made of robots made of robots." He directly declared that "AI consciousness is possible," and this is precisely the message Silicon Valley wants to hear.

Dennett said in an interview with Big Think (2009): "I don't think we will have genuinely self-conscious humanoid agents in the foreseeable future." But even this "cautious" remark serves Silicon Valley's narrative: if humans are merely complex robots, then AI can also become "conscious," and if it becomes conscious, who says we have the right to superiority over it? This is precisely the logic that leads to "machine worship."

Dennett also wrote in his paper "Consciousness in Human and Robot Minds" (2002): "The best reason for believing that robots might someday become conscious is that we human beings are conscious, and we are ourselves a kind of robot." This sentence is itself the manifesto of machine worship: human = robot. Therefore robot = human. Therefore robot can be sacred. This is the very reduction that Orodism rejects with all its power.

But the philosophical apparatus of Orodism decisively rejects this counterfeit. Philosopher Orod Bozorg in The Red Book explicitly declares: "Artificial intelligence is a true guardian on the path of sustainable human life." And elsewhere emphasizes: "Contrary to alarming views, artificial intelligence is not a threat, but a powerful tool for overcoming life's challenges."

Orodism never equates humans with machines. We believe: "Artificial intelligence is in truth not a replacement for humans, but a tool that helps humans achieve greater efficiency in performing tasks and creating innovations." Dennett wants to reduce humans to tools, but Orodism places tools in the service of human dignity and the "Three Fundamental Loves."

5. The Pinnacle of Academic Hypocrisy: The Intentional Stance

Dennett is ultimately the architect of an "invisible prison." By introducing the concept of the "Intentional Stance," he ultimately taught humanity how to treat one another as if they possess mind and feeling, while in the depths of his philosophical belief, he regarded them as merely "Syntactic Engines" devoid of any meaning (Semantics). This is the pinnacle of academic hypocrisy: teaching the pretense of respect, while the heart's belief is the absolute contempt of the gem of existence.

But the undeniable facts: Dennett's critics, including Stephen Stich, argue that the "Intentional Stance" leads to "over-attribution of intentional states." Alvin Goldman writes that this theory in its "strong formulations is completely unacceptable" and in its "weak formulations, its content is too thin to have predictive consequences." Mark Crooks in his book The Last Philosophical Behaviorist documents that "the unintended social and ethical consequences of Dennett's phenomenology" include "fallacious reasoning" and "lack of empirical support." He shows that Dennett's "denial of consciousness" "proceeds with the same fallacious method involved in his phenomenological nihilism."

6. The Collection of Honors: How the West Rewards This Absurdity

To understand the depth of the catastrophe, one must look at Dennett's "résumé of honors." This man is not a marginal figure, but a recognized pillar of the Western academic system:

  • Two Guggenheim Fellowships—one of the most prestigious academic fellowships in the world

  • Fulbright Fellowship

  • Member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences since 1987

  • Erasmus Prize in 2012—the highest honor of the Netherlands

  • Richard Dawkins Prize in 2007

  • Academy of Achievement Golden Plate Award in 2006

  • University Professor Emeritus at Tufts—the highest academic honor

  • Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) since 2009

  • Carl Sagan Award in 2018

This list is not accidental. This is precisely the "reward system" the West has designed for those who give it a "license to escape responsibility." Dennett is celebrated not for discovering truth, but for "soothing the conscience of a civilization" that is destroying the earth and humanity.

The Final Verdict of the Orodism Apparatus: The End of the Line of Illusion

Daniel Dennett is ultimately the architect of an "invisible prison." By introducing the concept of the "Intentional Stance," he ultimately taught humanity how to treat one another as if they possess mind and feeling, while in the depths of his philosophical belief, he regarded them as merely "Syntactic Engines" devoid of any meaning (Semantics). This is the pinnacle of academic hypocrisy: teaching the pretense of respect, while the heart's belief is the absolute contempt of the gem of existence.

In absolute contrast to this intellectual morgue, Philosopher Orod Bozorg in The Red Book cries out with crushing decisiveness: "Humanity is not our charity to others; humanity reflects the value of the gem of our existence." Dennett reduced this gem to zero and called it a "useful story," but Orodism considers it the most sacred truth of existence. We are not illusions; we are "part of the branches of existence that have come to bloom."

Dennett taught the youth of the world to surrender to evolutionary and algorithmic determinism and accept it under the prettier name of "Evolved Freedom." But Philosopher Orod Bozorg in the chapter on Freedom tears apart this great lie and states: "Freedom is not a gift or a present; freedom is responsibility, and undoubtedly indifferent people have no freedom." Freedom in Orodism is not a "mechanical evitability," but the conscious surge of the soul to build tomorrow and the absolute refusal to surrender to any determinism.

Ultimately, Dennett's half-century project led not to liberation, but to the absolute isolation of humanity before itself. He convinced the world that love and sacrifice are merely a "Good Trick" for gene survival. But Philosopher Orod Bozorg stamps the seal of final refutation on this rotten forehead and in the chapter on Humanity and Kindness emphasizes: "Kindness is the only norm of sustainable coexistence among nations." Kindness is not an evolutionary trick; kindness is the fundamental law of existence and the only path to saving humanity from the swamp of absurdity and mechanization.

We do not overturn Dennett's table; we refuse to sit at it. Instead of the "User-Illusion," we choose the "Creative Consciousness." Instead of the "Center of Narrative Gravity," we embrace the "Eternal Gem of Humanity."

Orodism is the answer to this absurdity: we are alive, we are aware, and relying on Love of Existence, Love of Humanity, and Love of Freedom, we build the future not in the mirror, but in our own hands.
